Located above the right moraine of the Leschaux glacier, the refuge is the ideal starting point for the mythical north face of the Grandes Jorasses.
Apart from guarding, the refuge has a room permanently open in winter with 10 places.

Tips and Suggestions
Day hike: Return trip Montenvers – Leschaux via the sea of ice and Leschaux glacier. Aimed at good walkers/mountaineers.
Hike over several days: Tour of the refuges of the massif, by the path of the balcony of the sea of ice. Grand!

Nearest village or station: Chamonix – Montenvers station.
Walking time from car park: Train 30 minutes then walk about 3 hours.
Access possible by path: Go down to the Mer de Glace glacier, go up the glacier, enter the moraine, right bank up to the big bend, follow the cairns up to the level of the ladders of the Couvercle refuge, go slightly to the right , reach the Leschaux glacier, go up the right bank glacier, locate the refuge, access the snowfield under the refuge, take the ladders.

- From 15/06 to 15/09, every day. Guarded depending on weather conditions. From 16/09 to 14/06, every day. Open and unguarded winter shelter (neither gas nor wood). Information excluding guarding: to improve your reception conditions at the refuge, by avoiding overcrowding and by making payment for nights more reliable, it is now necessary to reserve your night if you wish to sleep at the Leschaux refuge.
