Eglise baroque de Saint Nicolas de Véroce
Don't forget to visit the neighboring Museum of Sacred Art, to delve into the history of the village, its famous peddlers and the sumptuous Baroque era!
Perched on a promontory overlooking the Bonnant gorge, the church of Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce is recognized as one of the most beautiful churches in Haute-Savoie. Dedicated to Saint Nicholas, it was completely rebuilt between 1726 and 1729 thanks to the financing of haberdashery peddlers, itinerant and seasonal merchants specializing in the fabric trade, as well as wealthy merchants who emigrated to the Alemannic countries, notably the Genamys and the Revenaz, established in Vienna, Austria. Making a donation to a church was a way of demonstrating one's faith, prosperity and generosity, while contributing to one's Salvation, that is to say the redemption of one's sins and access to eternal life.
The church impresses not only with its superb facade, but above all with its vast painted decoration created in 1856 by the Avondo brothers on the vaults. We can see in particular the Last Supper, representing the last meal of Jesus and inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, as well as scenes from the life of Saint Nicholas and the life of Jesus. The main altarpiece, erected between 1698 and 1702 and repeated between 1769 and 1771, presents monumental architecture. The canvas by Antoine Herzog, painted in Vienna (Austria) in 1733, illustrates the Glory of Saint Nicholas.
The church also houses four side altars dedicated, from left to right, to the Virgin of the Rosary, Saint Martin, the souls of Purgatory and Saint Francis de Sales. Finally, it has a rich treasure highlighted in the museum of sacred art located right next door.
