Located above the Tour glacier, on its right bank, it is the only refuge managed by the Chamonix CAF that can be reached without going on a glacier in summer.
Its location is ideal with a view of a wide range of peaks: Aiguille du Tour, Grande Fourche, Chardonnet, Aiguille d'Argentière, the Verte and the Drus, the Aiguilles Rouges. The total renovation of the refuge in 2014 allows a spring opening for the practice of mountain skiing and mountaineering in winter conditions.
Its name is due to the Belgian King, Albert I, a mountaineer who was killed while climbing near Namur.
