In addition to the visit to the exhibitions of the castle, the group of children carries out with a mediator a workshop around natural dyes.
Nature brings us a multitude of colors. But what are the tinctorial plants and other plants for making a dye? During this workshop, children become budding chemists and experiment with the process of fabric dyeing.
The workshop takes place in 3 stages:
– The group discovers which plant materials can be used to dye fabrics. The older children also wonder about the perception of colors, as well as the biological and cultural parameters that allow us to distinguish them.
– Through dyeing experiments on different fabrics, children try to answer the following questions: is the colour of the plant the same as that extracted for dyeing? Can we have several shades of dye with the same plant? How long does it take to colour a fabric?
– At the end of the workshop, the children leave with their samples of dyed fabrics.
The educational objectives:
– Discover and understand how we can obtain dye from plants
– Experiment with chemical modifications Test the dye on different fabrics
For cycles 3 and 4:
– Learn the difference between a dye and a pigment
– Understand how colors react with chemical changes
