Saturday, August 3rd, 2013 : AWEK

With 8 albums and 18 years' experience behind them, Awek have acquired a strength and maturity worthy of their peers on the other side of the Atlantic. Their musical style is an explosive cocktail, mixing classicism and originality.

In addition to performing across Europe, India and North America, Awek has also performed in many blues and jazz festivals as the Vienne Jazz and Marciac Festivals or in the the Montreal Jazz Festival. Awek was honored as a finalist at the 2008 International Blues Challenge and in 2011 Stephane Bertolino won the prize for best harmonica player.

In 2009, Awek was elected band of the year by Cognac Blues festival, and opened for BB KING.

Following recordings in Austin and awards in Memphis, Awek's American adventure continued further west to Greaseland Studios in San Jose, California, where the band recorded their 8th CD, "Rich & Famous"in November 2011.

Guest musicians, in the studio include Mark Hummel, Little Charlie Baty, Kid Andersen, Fred Kaplan, Derek O’ Brien, Kaz Kazanoff, Bob Welsh, and Nick Connely.

He was born in 1963 in the suburb of Paris. When Youssef was 14, he heard a blues song on the radio and just loved it. At 22, he started learning harmonica and 5 years later he and Dominique Talma joined up to form the duo "Back Door." Around the same time, he met the legendary Champion Jack Dupree, who invited him to come and play for a couple of shows and strongly encouraged the young bluesman to keep on playing-- something he's been doing for 20 years now, not just as a duo with Dominique but also with such excellent groups as Awek, Mudzilla, the Boogie Disease, and his own "Paris Blues Band," composed of the crème de la crème of Parisian blues players. Over the years, Youssef has forged his particular style playing and singing blues from Chicago to France.
